Installation of the hydrogen production unit begins in Jyväskylä. The unit will be located at Finland’s first operational hydrogen refuelling station. The installation is related to Central Finland Mobility Foundation’s (Cefmof) previously announced order of a hydrogen production unit and water purification system from Asahi Kasei Corporation (Asahi Kasei), and the order is now progressing into the concrete implementation phase.

Commissioning of the equipment, in cooperation with project partners, is managed by Cefmof Hydrogen Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Central Finland Mobility Foundation. The company is also responsible for operating the hydrogen refuelling station.

Containerised alkaline water electrolysis system enables local hydrogen production

The hydrogen production unit is a 1-megawatt-scale containerised alkaline water electrolysis system. The equipment supplied by electrolyzer technology specialist Asahi Kasei has been delivered to the Jyväskylä hydrogen refuelling station, and industrial installation of the hydrogen production system has commenced. Installation and system integration will proceed in phases throughout the spring and early summer.

The alkaline water electrolysis system will be installed adjacent to the refuelling station and once completed, will enable local hydrogen production. The aim is to begin hydrogen production during summer 2026 and to bring the unit into regular, established operation at the refuelling station by the end of the year.

Production capacity can be expanded as needed by adding additional 1-MW containerised electrolysis units at the refuelling station as hydrogen demand increases. At full load, the system has a nominal hydrogen production capacity of approximately 400 kilograms per day. The maximum daily output fits into a single 20-ft hydrogen storage container.

“This marks a significant milestone, as only a limited number of hydrogen production facilities are currently in operation in Finland. Cefmof Hydrogen Ltd. is among the first operators in Finland to deploy a containerised alkaline water electrolysis system of this scale for hydrogen production,” says Lauri Perämäki, Deputy Member of the Board of Cefmof Hydrogen Ltd.

“We are delighted that the installation of the hydrogen production plant at Jyväskylä is now moving into the implementation phase. This milestone advances our decarbonization efforts and supports the development of the hydrogen ecosystem in Central Finland. It furthermore represents a significant step in demonstrating the reliability and scalability of Asahi Kasei’s water electrolysis technology,” says Kenji Takeda, Executive Officer, Asahi Kasei Corporation.

The project’s local implementation builds on Central Finland’s technology and manufacturing expertise

Energy and technology company Metener Service Oy will deliver the hydrogen compression unit to the Jyväskylä hydrogen refuelling station, where the produced hydrogen will be efficiently pressurised and stored in hydrogen containers. Metener also holds overall responsibility for the project’s industrial implementation and is responsible for installation of the production equipment in cooperation with the technology supplier.

“It is significant for us to be involved in building new hydrogen infrastructure and advancing the energy transition towards fossil-free solutions. The project creates employment in Central Finland both for our own experts and for our local subcontracting network,” says Juho Tasanen, CEO of Metener Service Oy.

Hydrogen storage and alternative supply sources support station operations

Cefmof Hydrogen Ltd. has procured its own hydrogen storage containers from Hexagon Purus. These containers will be used as a hydrogen source for the refuelling station. P2X Solutions Oy’s hydrogen production will continue to serve as an alternative hydrogen supply source to ensure uninterrupted hydrogen delivery to the refuelling station.

The project strengthens the position of Jyväskylä and Central Finland as a development platform for the hydrogen economy and brings concrete industrial expertise in hydrogen production, installation and commissioning to the region. Local implementation also supports regional business activity and competence development. Cefmof Hydrogen Ltd.
