Hydrogen-Powered
Public Transport Pilot
in 2025
OVERVIEW
Jyväskylä will become Finland’s pioneer city for green hydrogen-powered public transport in 2025. As part of this groundbreaking initiative, five Caetano H2 City Gold hydrogen buses will be integrated into the city’s public transportation fleet.
The buses will be leased to Koiviston Auto Jyväskylä under a two-year rental agreement, and Cefmof will also provide support for operational costs if necessary. The manufacturer CaetanoBus is also participating in the pilot, offering technical support and contributing to the further development of the fleet for northern conditions.
To support the project, a new hydrogen refuelling station is scheduled to open in the summer of 2025. The project is led by the Central Finland Mobility Foundation (Cefmof) in active collaboration with other key stakeholders.
This pilot aims to demonstrate the performance and feasibility of green hydrogen technologies under northern climate conditions, while contributing to a cleaner, more resilient urban environment and economy.
OBJECTIVES
Promoting Carbon Neutrality
The hydrogen buses will help ensure steady, daily demand for hydrogen. The project aims to promote carbon neutrality by advancing Jyväskylä’s transition toward sustainable, low-emission urban transport solutions. The station will be an essential part of the emerging green hydrogen ecosystem in Central Finland which is Carbon Neutral. It will also test the performance and operational feasibility of green hydrogen-powered buses in the challenging northern climate, providing valuable insights for future deployment.
Building Green Hydrogen Ecosystem
Another key objective is to build the foundation for a green hydrogen ecosystem in Central Finland by establishing critical infrastructure such as a hydrogen refueling station. At the same time, the project seeks to raise public awareness and understanding of green hydrogen by offering citizens tangible, real-world experiences with technology.
Fostering Economic Resilience
Finally, the project is designed to foster economic resilience by investing in future-proof, clean transport solutions that will strengthen the local economy and support long-term sustainability goals.
ACTIONS
Integrating Hydrogen Buses and Infrastructure
The project will integrate five Caetano H2 City Gold hydrogen buses into Jyväskylä’s public transport system and test operations beginning by July 2025. At the same time, a hydrogen refueling station capable of serving both heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles will be completed by the end of summer 2025 to support the growing hydrogen ecosystem.
Strengthening Project Coordination and Stakeholder Collaboration
Cefmof will assume a leading role in coordinating the project, ensuring seamless collaboration among stakeholders and adherence to the project timeline. Through strong partnerships, the initiative aims to support the expansion of the green hydrogen value chain across Central Finland.
Promoting Public Engagement and Awareness
The project will actively engage the public by showcasing the benefits of hydrogen-powered transport. These efforts will help raise awareness, foster acceptance of clean technologies, and encourage community support for sustainable urban solutions.
